The one year programme in Social Studies primarily aims to provide a good basis for teaching social studies in primary school in Norway. The study will also be relevant for teaching subjects such as social studies, history and geography in upper secondary school. Methodological and didactic issues related to the three subject areas of geography, history and social studies will be central. 

The study consists of four units, each worth 15 ECTS:

Autumn semester: Social studies in today's education (15 ECTS) and Identity, community and participation (15 ECTS)

Spring semester: Norwegian and International History (15 ECTS) and Man, Nature and Society (15 ECTS)

The entire course is online-based, but in addition, excursions, institution visits and practical work may be offered for those who have the opportunity to meet in Levanger. The one year programme in Social Studies is a full-time study, and requires active digital participation throughout the academic year. The start of studies is normally in the latter half of August.

KNOWLEDGE 

The candidate 

  • Has knowledge of social studies as a school subject 
  • Has knowledge of central social studies and social studies didactic concepts, perspectives and methods
  • Has knowledge of growing up in Norway today, from a social, economic and technological perspective 
  • Has knowledge of the main historical features of social development in Norway, Sápmi and the world 
  • Has knowledge of interaction and conflict between climate, natural resources, land use, food production and living conditions nationally and internationally 
  • Has knowledge of the Norwegian political system and the welfare state 
  • Has knowledge of key wars and international conflicts, and how war, conflict and genocide have challenged democracy and human rights 
  • Has knowledge of central features of democracy such as form of government, challenges for democracy, and social studies didactic perspective on democracy and citizenship in a school context 
  • Has knowledge of social science theories about multicultural societies and racism 
  • Has knowledge of the social role of the media, the latest media developments including fake and real information, as well as consequences for democracy 

SKILLS 

The candidate 

  • Can use social studies and social studies didactic knowledge to reflect on own teaching and role as a social studies teacher 
  • Can reflect critically on various aspects of democracy and democracy education 
  • Can discuss and facilitate training on key societal challenges 
  • Can work with different sources, in different arenas and with different methods to make social studies teaching exploratory 
  • Can discuss the consequences of new technology such as artificial intelligence in society and school 
  • Can work with values and attitudes in the school's social studies to promote critical reflection and action skills in the students 

GENERAL COMPETENCE 

The candidate 

  • Can reflect critically and independently on key sociological and didactic questions and stimulate critical thinking 
  • Can work independently and together with others to facilitate students' learning and development in social studies 
  • Can apply research-based knowledge and theoretical concepts
     
For admission to the study program generell studiekompetanse (general study qualification) is required. Applicants who do not have general study qualifications, and who are 25 years of age or older, can apply for admission on the basis of realkompetanse (real qualifications).

One year programme in Social Studies provides teaching competence in primary school and in other types of school, provided that you have completed teacher training in accordance with current regulations.
Årsstudiet i samfunnsfag can be part of a self-selected bachelor's or master's degree.

Semester fee and curriculum literature.

It is assumed that the students have their own laptop. For digital communication in the study, a webcam and headphones are included as part of the standard accessories. The students themselves must cover the costs for this.

There are separate assessment and examination forms for each of the subjects in the one year programme in Social Studies. The exam is regulated by the study regulations.
