Programme description

The programme of study addresses the history, philosophy and place in society of pedagogy. Key theories, issues and methods within the fields of educational welfare and special needs education also play a central role. The programme of study’s target group is anyone who wishes to acquire expertise in pedagogy with an emphasis on educational welfare and special needs education. 

Career opportunities

The programme is suitable for anyone who wishes to acquire expertise in pedagogy with an emphasis on educational welfare and special needs education, e.g. engineers or others with backgrounds in natural sciences, nurses, social workers, kindergarten assistants.
The teaching is organised into 6 study sessions of 4 days each (from Monday to Thursday). The programme of study has 4 sessions on campus and 2 online sessions.

Ten days of relevant observational training. If a student works at a place that conducts educational activities, they may complete their supervised professional training at their own workplace. If not, the student must find their own relevant place of professional training.

Admission to the programme of study requires Higher Education Entrance Qualifications.

Applicants who do not have Higher Education Entrance Qualifications and are 25 years of age or older may apply for admission based on their prior learning and work experience.

An approved certificate of good conduct is required from the police.

Knowledge

Upon completion of the programme of study, the candidate will have

  • knowledge about the history, philosophy and place in society of pedagogy, and about educational welfare and special needs education as professional disciplines and areas of activity
  • basic knowledge about key topics, theories, issues and methods within the subject areas of educational welfare and special needs education
  • knowledge about how to update oneself academically within the fields of educational welfare and special needs education
  • knowledge about legislation and framework conditions applicable to teaching work

Skills

Upon completion of the programme of study, the candidate will be able to

  • apply academic knowledge and relevant results from research and development work in relation to practical and theoretical issues in educational welfare and special needs education, and make academically justified choices
  • plan and evaluate educational welfare and special educational work at individual, group and system levels 
  • plan and carry out educational welfare and special educational tasks in accordance with ethical requirements and guidelines
  • convey key subject matter in writing, orally and through relevant forms of expression

General competence 

Upon completion of the programme of study, the candidate will

  • have insight into academic and professional issues of an ethical nature that are related to their own working practices
  • be able to reflect on their own professional practice and adjust this under supervision
  • be able to find, assess and refer to information and subject matter, and present this in such a way that it highlights relevant issues within educational welfare and special educational fields of work

have an understanding of individual-group-society interaction, and be able to view educational work from a system perspective
