Programme description

​The study programme provides expertise in music technology and the production of music. The study programme aims to raise awareness of the musicians and music educators of the future about the tools at their disposal within the practice/teaching of music.

The use of digital tools within music practice and teaching is also a gateway to today's youth culture, and its cultural expression. Therefore, the course will be of great use for those who work/want to work with youth-related cultural work.

Admission to the programme of study requires Higher Education Entrance Qualification.

Applicants who do not have Higher Education Entrance Qualification and are 25 years of age or older may apply for admission on the basis of prior learning and work experience.

The course may be included as part of a bachelor's degree, of a teacher education, or as a further education for musicians, cultural workers, teachers and others.

MUP510, Music Production 1:

KNOWLEDGE The student will

  • have knowledge of - and can document experience with sound and sound engineering within the field of music production
  • have an understanding of - and is able to use analogue and digital equipment within the field of music production
  • have in-depth knowledge of acoustics in the editing and mixing process
  • have knowledge of instrumentation and soundscape within various music productions
  • have knowledge of communication, involvement and adaptation in connection with music production

SKILLS The student will

  • be able to use various digital and analogue tools, such as ProTools and online software in the composition of music
  • be able to use various digital and analogue tools, such as ProTools and online software in the implementation of an audio recording with a traditional band set-up
  • be able to use his/her knowledge of sound to make high-quality recordings

GENERAL COMPETENCE The student will

  • through analytical and reflected use of various music production tools, be able to use their knowledge to prepare and record a music production
  • be able to analyse and reflect on the different roles and situations that occur during the recording phase of a music production

MUP520, Music Production 2:

KNOWLEDGE The student will

  • have knowledge of various arranging and editing techniques in the use of digital music production tools.
  • have in-depth knowledge of acoustics in the editing and mixing process
  • have knowledge of communication, involvement and adaptation in connection with music production

SKILLS The student will

  • be able to use various digital and analogue tools, such as ProTools and online software in arranging and editing recorded music
  • be able to use various digital and analogue tools, such as ProTools and online software in the mixing of recorded music.
  • be able to create his/her own full-fledged music productions in a sound studio
  • be able to use his/her knowledge of sound to mix high-quality music productions.

GENERAL COMPETENCE The student will

  • through analytical and reflected use of various music production tools, be able to use their knowledge to complete a music production of high quality.
  • be able to analyse and reflect on the different roles and situations that occur during the completion of a music production

The course requires that the student has access to their own computer equipment with a minimum of 1024 mb of RAM internal working memory: as well as ProTools with accompanying Interface and microphone. This equipment cannot be purchased through the college, but the lecturer will help with information about various solutions. This can be organized at the beginning of the semester. Costs are in the range of 4500 NOK.

It is assumed that students have their own laptop computers. For digital communication during the programme, webcams and headphones are regarded as standard equipment. Students must cover these costs. See the current requirements on Nord University's Web site. There is no tuition fees beyond the semester and course literature (kopinor) fees.
